The real format of the data interview

The typical stages, what each one measures, and how to distribute study time across them.

Promise: a map of the stages and a study plan proportional to what is actually tested.

Why it matters

Senior data engineers usually study what is comfortable. The interview tests what is verifiable in 45 minutes: SQL without looking things up, performance reasoning, pipeline design, and communication.

Common stages

StageWhat it measuresTypical duration
Recruiter screeningchain, contract, rate, timezone20–30 min
Technical 1 — SQLjoins, window functions, aggregations, NULL pitfalls45–60 min
Technical 2 — ProgrammingPython/Scala for data transformation45–60 min
Pipeline designdecisions, trade-offs, failures, cost45–60 min
Platform specialistSpark/Databricks/Snowflake, performance45–60 min
Behavioralworking with teams, conflict, ambiguity30–45 min
Manager / clientfit, expectations, availability30 min

B2B contracts usually have fewer stages than full-time employment. Even so, expect SQL and pipeline design.

Do this now

Set up an 8-week calendar with this distribution. Reserve fixed time slots. Note which topics you already feel you master, and which ones you avoid.

Golden rule

The exercises in this module are meant to be completed without AI and without looking things up first. Lesson 5.8 explains why and how.
