Plan B: one backpack, insurance, and redundancy

The minimal one-backpack work kit, insurance, and what to do when something goes wrong far from home.

Promise: a departure checklist and a written plan B for the three problems that most often take people off the road: equipment, health, and internet.

Why it matters

Freedom breaks on a single detail: a dropped laptop, luggage damaged on a flight, internet that drops right before a deadline. Those who have a plan B keep working; those who don't go back home.

The minimal one-backpack kit (work)

The "one backpack" topic has its own upcoming lesson in preparation. Here we cover only the work kit.

Insurance

Health insurance that covers where you will be and, if possible, equipment. The author's real example: luggage damaged on a flight and an item lost in a hostel, with no travel insurance, leaving no path to reimbursement. The cost of insurance is lower than the cost of one of these incidents.

The written plan B

ProblemPlan BWhere it is
Laptop breaks or is stolenbackup device or remote access + local store at destination
Internet goes down before a deadlinesecond SIM card, coworking, client notification
Health issueinsurance, insurer contact, nearby clinic
Lost documentdigital copy, consulate
Do this now

Write your plan B and check your kit before your next trip.

Common mistakes

Traveling without insurance "because it's only a short time"; having backups only on the laptop itself; not knowing the consulate's contact info.
